A successful prototype proves that a part can work. Production requires proving that it can be manufactured again and again under the requirements of the program.

That transition can be particularly challenging in aerospace and defense, where material controls, documentation, inspection requirements, tooling, process parameters and qualification requirements can all become part of the production equation.

A prototype process may rely heavily on individual craftsmanship or accommodate extra time that simply isn’t practical at production volume. As demand increases, manufacturers have to determine how the process will be controlled, where variability can occur and what needs to change to support efficient production.

The earlier those questions are addressed, the easier it is to create a path from a successful first part to a sustainable production program.
