Filament winding can be an exceptionally effective way to manufacture strong, lightweight composite structures but only when the application plays to the process’s strengths.

The process places continuous reinforcement around a rotating mandrel in controlled patterns. That makes it particularly well suited for cylindrical or axisymmetric components that need to manage pressure, torque or structural loads.

For aerospace applications, that can include lightweight structural components and pressure vessels. In energy, filament-wound components can provide strength and corrosion resistance for demanding operating environments.

But geometry, load direction, openings, fittings, production volume and other requirements all influence whether winding is the right approach.

At GP&C, we evaluate the component and its performance requirements before recommending a manufacturing process. Have a cylindrical or pressure loaded component in development? Talk with our engineers about whether filament winding could be the right fit.
